"Friends of the Edgar Wood Centre"

The Friends of Long Street Methodist Church have fulfilled their aim in securing the long term future of the Edgar Wood building we worship in.
It is now time to begin a new ‘Friends’ group under the auspices of the
Greater Manchester Building Preservation Trust,
the organisation who now own the building.
The Trustees of the GMBPT are keen to have a ‘Friends’ group because they will continue to need people to volunteer to help with events such as the Heritage Open Days, to help fundraise, and to raise the profile of

in the local and wider community.

If you would like to join us in preserving this “architectural gem”
which is a Grade II* listed building

Renovations with aid of a Lottery Grant have been completed on the Hall and School Rooms to bring this part of the premises up-to-date.

2010 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of “that remarkable Manchester architect Edgar Wood” (as described by Sir Nikolaus Pevsne) Dr. John Archer gave a talk at the church on Edgar Wood and Middleton. John has had a lifelong interest in the work of Edgar Wood and has recently completed an architectural survey of the church. In doing so has become interested in the history of the town,
and its influence on its famous son.

The evening began with tea and coffee served from 6. 15 pm for people arriving early. The illustrated talk was followed at 7 pm in the church (about 35-45 minutes), then supper of potato pie, cheese pie and dessert  followed in the church hall. The whole of this beautiful church complex was open for people to wander around. After supper there was an  opportunity to ask questions.

Long Street Methodist Church is on Long Street, Middleton. M24 5UE. There is a good car park at the rear of the church for visitors for Sunday Services and during Heritage Weekends.
